Happy 50th Birthday Don Hommer!
This post is a little belated, but my wonderful father recently celebrated his 50th birthday! To celebrate this milestone, my family rented out the Grand Master Suite at Riverside Casino and Golf Resort and invited about 100 friends and family to come down for some food, adult beverages and a little gambling. I would say that the event was a hit - everyone we talked to had a great time. A ton of our family was able to make it from south-central Iowa and lots of people from our hometown as well. I think my dad was very surprised at the turn out, but it's always nice to be reminded of how many wonderful friends my family has made in our 20+ years in Mount Vernon.

Heritage Days 2009

For those of you unfamiliar with small-town life, every respectable small town throws a little party every year, normally ending with the word "days". There is Sauerkraut Days in Lisbon, Watermelon Days some where up north, Old Settlers Days in New Virgina, well, in Mount Vernon, we have Heritage Days.
Every year, everyone that grew up in Mount Vernon or has some kind of tie, tries their best to make it back... Why you ask? Because its always a blast! There is a street band, a mid-way, lots of carnie food and of course, beer!
This year was especially fun for Bryan and I. Heritage Days kicked off on Thursday night with a fireworks show right across the street from Bryan's new house, so we had people over for a bon-fire and watched the fireworks. The rest of the weekends events take place in uptown Mount Vernon, which is where my new apartment happens to be located. So I threw a little housewarming party on Saturday night before we all headed up town.
Its always fun to see people you haven't seen in awhile and especially fun to be outside on a summer night, listening to music and enjoying a few beers. :)
Already looking forward to next year...

Mama Hommer Turns 5-0!
This past weekend, my wonderful mother, Debbie (aka Debabe) turned 50! My mother means the world to me, she is one of my best friends and has been there for me during the ups and downs of my life, no matter how big of a brat I have been. To mark this milestone birthday of hers, we threw her a surprise party at Gwen's in Lisbon. Both of mom's sisters, Diane and Marsie made the trip as well as her brother Roger. Many of my cousins were able to attend and most of my dad's family as well as tons of friends from the area. Mom was absolutly speechless, she was bawling (good tears though!). I could not have asked for a better night for my mother and I am so grateful to everyone who braved the cold weather and made the drive, your presence meant the world to my whole family! Pictures from the post party will be coming, or you can check out my facebook page for all of them!

Iowa/Minnesota Game
I made the trip up to Minneapolis this past weekend for the Iowa/Minnesota game. Iowa beat Minnesota 55-0 in their final game in the metro-dome, which added to the already fun-packed weekend we had! Three of my college girlfriends were in town, including my friend Erin who recently informed us all that she is pregnant! It was great seeing all of them and catching up and also hanging out with my parents! Go Hawks!
